Abstract:

This chapter will explore the dynamics involved in the relationship between the doctoral supervisor and the doctoral student. This is done through reflecting upon the authors’ own experiences as supervisors and relating those experiences to the nine elements of good supervisor practice. The chapter will also explore successful ways of managing the relationship and the milestones that doctoral students may have to go through to complete their doctoral studies. It does this through conceptualising the student–supervisor relationship not as a hierarchical function, but as a more collaborative activity, underpinned by the concept of humanisation.
