Abstract:This exhibition presents the virtual reconstruction of the St. Gregory Mass statue at Shaftesbury Abbey Museum, employing photogrammetry as the principal methodology. The St. Gregory Mass statue, a significant medieval artifact, had deteriorated over time, necessitating a digital reconstruction to preserve its historical and cultural value. Photogrammetry, a technique that utilizes multiple photographs to create accurate 3D models, was employed to capture the intricate details of the statue’s remaining fragments. Through high-resolution imaging and precise calibration, a detailed digital replica was constructed, allowing for the visualization of the statue as it would have appeared in its original form.
The use of photogrammetry in this project allowed for minimal physical intervention, ensuring the preservation of the artifact while creating an accessible virtual model for further study and exhibition. This exhibition not only contributes to the historical understanding of the statue but also serves as a case study demonstrating the effectiveness of photogrammetry in the virtual restoration of cultural heritage artifacts. The resulting model provides museum visitors and researchers alike with a valuable tool for engaging with the historical context of Shaftesbury Abbey.
