Abstract:The course of the scientific renaissance in Iraq has witnessed great names that left an enduring mark on intellectual life, the judiciary, and academic research. Their influence extended beyond the borders of the homeland, reaching the libraries and prestigious universities of the world. Among these distinguished figures stand two members of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences: Dhia Sheet Khattab (former Head of the High Supreme Court of Iraq) and Dr. Mahmoud Al-Jalili (founder and first President of the University of Mosul). More than half a century ago, the two engaged in scholarly debates of remarkable depth, embodying a unique intersection between science and medical research on the one hand, and jurisprudence and legal thought on the other.
Dhia Sheet Khattab, the scholar-judge and dean of Iraq’s judiciary, was a prominent academic and legal figure who combined jurisprudence, law, and scholarly research. He served as Head of the High Supreme Court of Iraq and as a professor of law at the Universities of Baghdad, Al-Mustansiriyah, and Al-Nahrain, as well as at the Judicial Institute and the Institute of Arab Studies of the League of Arab States. He was also a member of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences and Dar Al-Hikma, in addition to his membership in the Arabic Language Academies of Damascus and Amman, and the International Arbitration Panel associated with the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
This article documents four significant milestones from the legacy of these Mosuli scholars and reveals how they were more than half a century ahead of their time, while their contributions continue to resonate in Arab and Western academic circles to this day.
First: A scientific and jurisprudential debate between Iraq’s leading jurist and judge, Dhia Sheet Khattab, and Dr. Mahmoud Al-Jalili.
Second: Pioneering contributions to academic and legal research methodologies.
Third: The works of Dhia Sheet Khattab and their presence in libraries around the world.
Fourth: Dhia Sheet Khattab and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Law School at George Washington University in the United States.
The life and achievements of Dhia Sheet Khattab, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Jalili, and other distinguished personalities from Mosul are not merely personal recollections; they form part of the intellectual and scientific history of Iraq and the Arab world. Through their debates, publications, and methodologies, they demonstrated that the people of Mosul were capable of producing scholars who were ahead of their era and who attained international recognition despite limited resources and numerous challenges. These examples deserve to be taught to future generations—not only to honour their pioneers, but also in the conviction that true knowledge is bound neither by time nor place, and that a genuine legacy continues to live on long after its creators have passed away: in books, in minds, and in the memory of the world’s universities.
