Biography
Thomas Mitchell is a doctoral researcher whose work explores the use of e-learning to enhance the educational experiences of individuals with Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is a lifelong neural tube condition affecting the development of the spine and nervous system, often resulting in physical, cognitive, and accessibility-related challenges that can impact learning and participation in education.
His research focuses on how thoughtfully designed e-learning environments can reduce barriers, improve accessibility, and support more inclusive learning experiences for individuals with Spina Bifida. This is an important area of research as digital education continues to expand, yet inclusive design for learners with complex physical and neurological needs remains underexplored. His work aims to contribute to the development of more equitable and accessible approaches to online and blended learning.
Alongside his doctoral studies, Thomas has several years of experience teaching STEM subjects across a range of educational settings... His professional background in teaching and curriculum design informs his research, ensuring it is grounded in practical classroom experience as well as academic inquiry.
Thomas also engages with organisations supporting individuals with Spina Bifida, including SHINE, to help inform his understanding of learner needs and experiences. His broader research interests include inclusive digital pedagogy, accessible learning design, and the role of technology in supporting participation and inclusion in education.
