Profile of Teaching PG

• CPD1: Management of Policies & Plans (MSc Disaster Management). 2.0 UNIT AIM The aim of the unit is to develop in students a systematic understanding of Disaster Management and to assist them in a solid and critical awareness of the national and international current best practices in developing national disaster management policies and plans. 3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES Having completed this Unit, the student is expected to: 1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the international definitions and concepts relevant to disaster management; 2. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the problems and issues relating to the development and implementation of policies and plans relating to disaster management; 3. Develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and techniques available for risk reduction through identifying, assessing, reducing and preparing to respond to likely impacts from a wide range of hazards; 4. Develop originality and confidence in understanding how to integrate relevant stakeholders into planning for rapid response and recovery activities as part of a wider disaster management strategy and plan; 5. Evaluate critically the processes of situational analysis leading to integrated disaster management planning and response management; 6. Evaluate relevant research and analysis of national and international plans and strategies relating to disaster management; 7. Critically evaluate major incident management models, including all the key components, in their national contexts and, where appropriate, propose new solutions and strategies; 8. Work in dialogue with a team of peers and mentors to complete a strategic planning exercise to develop a national disaster management plan involving government ministries, emergency and military agencies, public and private organisations in order to demonstrate ability to operate in complex and unpredictable environments.

  Lecture and Discussion presented to Retired Air Vice Marshall Audu Bida, Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Purpose of lecture and executive discussion was to present BUDMC's ability to assist NEMA in the development of a national plan for Nigeria and to win a contract lasting over six years delivering professional practice training and consultancy to the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency, Police, Fire Service, Military and other key stakeholders.
