Biography
Dr Catalin Brylla is Principal Lecturer in Film and TV at Bournemouth University and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Conflict, Emotion and Social Justice. He is also on the Board of Directors for SCSMI (Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image) and Chair of its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
His work explores how digital media can reduce stigma and promote inclusion, particularly in relation to disability and other marginalised communities. He combines research, teaching and creative practice, and has directed award-winning documentaries screened internationally.
Catalin has secured major research funding as Principal Investigator from the Leverhulme Trust, AHRC and the British Academy, and collaborates with academic, industry and community partners across the UK and internationally.
He teaches across film and media production, documentary and media theory, and he supervises doctoral research. His teaching emphasises socially engaged storytelling, critical thinking, and industry-relevant skills, preparing students to create impactful media in professional contexts...
Before joining Bournemouth University, he worked at the University of West London, University of South Wales, University College London, Middlesex University and Goldsmiths, University of London.
moreResearch
Catalin’s research examines how media representations shape audience perceptions of marginalised groups, with a particular focus on disability, stigma and social attitudes. His work integrates media studies and social psychology to analyse how stereotypes are constructed and how prejudice can be reduced through film, television and digital media. He has also explored the use of media for physical, mental and economic wellbeing, as well as for social and cultural participation. A central concern across these research strands is intersectionality, addressing the interaction of gender, dis/ability, ethnicity, class and other social identities in media production, representation and reception.
His research is interdisciplinary, combining discourse and content analysis with audience research, participatory action research, ethnography and practice-led approaches. This enables both the critical analysis of media texts and the development of applied strategies for harnessing the social impact potential of media.
He has led and contributed to projects funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust. These include research on disability representation in UK media, inclusive media practice in East Africa and media engagement interventions to support wellbeing in visually impaired communities. He has worked with a variety of organisations, including the BBC, Sky, Channel 4, ITV, the Thomas Pocklington Trust and Dorset Blind Association.
His publications include the monograph Documentary and Stereotypes: Reducing Stigma through Factual Media and the co-edited volumes Documentary and Disability and Cognitive Theory and Documentary Film... Alongside his academic research, he produces documentaries that explore marginalised perspectives and challenge ‘othering’ stereotypes, linking research, creative practice and public engagement.
He welcomes PhD proposals in any of the above areas.
