Biography

John is an internationally renowned economist, highly regarded for his pioneering work in tourism impact and development research. John was a member of the Office of the Vice Chancellor, in his role as Pro Vice Chancellor, responsible for the university's Research and Innovation. Following his retirement in 2023, he is now Emeritus Professor and still actively involved in research. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters including being one of the founding co-authors of one of the leading textbooks, Tourism Principles & Practice, which ran to 6 editions. He was also the founding Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Tourism Research.

John is a Fellow of the Tourism Society and a Fellow of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST). Prior to BU, John was Head of Research and Postgraduate Programmes at the University of Surrey and Director of the Institute of Economic Research, Bangor University, where he undertook his Masters and PhD in Economics.
