- Principal Academic in Film Production
Biography
Reina has been conducting practice-based research for over a decade. Her work predominantly focusses on docudrama and documentary storytelling that promote movement building, reconciliation, human rights and conservation. She completed her practice-based PhD on the concept of “documemory” and the ethical representation of war trauma on screen. Her films have received several awards from international film festivals including, for example, the Durban International Film Festival. Reina also conducted extended fieldwork in South Africa entailing the socio-political value of Ubuntu – the experience of which deeply influences her practical and pedagogical work.
Reina is the editor-in-chief of a new journal entitled 'Journal of Media and Rights' (published by AOSIS, Africa's largest open-access academic publisher). The journal focuses on the intersection between media (in all its incarnations) and human rights. It also aims to provide a platform for practice-based and practice-led researchers to publish work...
Prior to joining BU, Reina worked as the Children's Rights Project Manager at the Global Campus of Human Rights, where her work centred on the promotion of the rights of the child. A particular interest of hers during this period was the development of strategies that would ensure the participation of children and young people as co-creators in research and practical projects.
