- Principal Academic In Biomechanics and Performance Analysis
Biography
Dr Andrew Callaway is Director of the Human Performance Laboratory and Principal Academic in Sports Biomechanics and Performance Analysis within the School of Allied Health and Exercise Science at Bournemouth University. His research draws on a background in electronics engineering and computing to develop robust, ecologically valid measurement approaches for understanding human movement and performance across sport, occupational, and high-demand operational contexts.
A central focus of Dr Callaway’s work is the translation of biomechanical and performance analysis methods from controlled laboratory environments into real-world settings. His research spans the development and validation of wearable and sensor-based technologies, the assessment of movement mechanics and load, and the analysis of performance and injury risk under realistic task, environmental, and fatigue constraints. This approach underpins applied projects ranging from performance analysis in elite sport to biomechanical evaluation of casualty handling techniques in mountain rescue operations...
Dr Callaway’s research philosophy emphasises that biomechanical data must be both scientifically rigorous and meaningful to end-users. By prioritising field-based data collection and close collaboration with practitioners, his work supports evidence-informed decision-making in training design, performance optimisation, injury prevention, and equipment development. Wearable technology plays a key role within this programme, with a strong emphasis on validity, reliability, and appropriate interpretation to enable personalised and context-specific interventions.
Alongside his research activity, Dr Callaway provides academic leadership across postgraduate education, contributing to the development of the MSc Strength and Conditioning, MSc Sport and Exercise Science, and MSc Sports Performance Analysis programmes. His teaching integrates contemporary research, applied case studies, and industry engagement, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional practice. Through national and international collaborations with universities, sports organisations, and emergency services, he continues to advance applied biomechanics and performance analysis with clear societal and practitioner impact.

Managing Cervical Spine Injuries in Mountain Rescue
This match-funded PhD project, delivered in collaboration with Bangor University and Mountain Rescue England and Wales, investigates the management of suspected cervical spine injuries during mountain rescue operations. Using in-vivo 3D motion tracking within simulated rescue scenarios, the research evaluates casualty handling techniques, including the use of vacuum mattresses and stretchers, to quantify and minimise cervical spine movement during extrication and transport.
The project aims to generate robust, ecologically valid biomechanical evidence to inform best-practice guidelines, training protocols, and equipment use within mountain rescue contexts. By integrating biomechanical analysis with the operational constraints of remote and high-risk environments, the research contributes directly to improved casualty care and responder safety.

Performance Analysis for Beach Sprint Rowing (British Rowing Collaboration)
In preparation for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, this applied research project examines the performance demands of beach sprint rowing, a newly introduced Olympic discipline. Working in close collaboration with British Rowing, the research analyses biomechanical and tactical characteristics across both sprint and slalom components of the event.
The project aims to support athlete preparation, coaching decision-making, and talent development by providing evidence-based insights into technique, race strategy, and performance determinants in ecologically valid competitive environments...

Obstacle Course Biomechanics for Pentathlon GB
This collaborative project with Pentathlon GB investigates the biomechanical demands of obstacle course racing within the modern pentathlon, following recent changes to the sport’s competitive format for the LA 2028 Olympic cycle. Through detailed biomechanical analysis of obstacle negotiation techniques, the research seeks to identify movement strategies associated with efficient and safe performance.
Outcomes from this work aim to inform coaching practice, enhance technical proficiency, and reduce injury risk in a high-demand, time-critical competitive environment.

Ecological Biomechanical Analysis of ACL Injury Risk
This research programme focuses on understanding ACL injury risk through the integration of in-game movement mechanics and training load exposure, captured within ecologically valid sporting environments. By linking biomechanical analysis with player load monitoring, the project seeks to move beyond laboratory-based injury models to better reflect the complex demands experienced by athletes in training and competition.
The long-term aim of this work is to support the development of evidence-based injury prevention strategies and training management practices that enhance athlete welfare while maintaining performance capacity.
